An equilibrium finite element formulation for linear elastostatics is presented. The characteristics of this formulation and the ways of eliminating the drawbacks usually associated with this kind of elements, because of which conventional, compatible, formulations are usually preferred, are discussed. Examples of the application of this formulation to three-dimensional elasticity are presented.
